Let’s talk about what wire decking is. It is a type of pallet support for racking that can be used in many different types of racking. Made of a mesh of welded wire with a number of supports that are placed under it with a waterfall on each side to go over the front and back of the beams, it is a great support. It allows you to use multiple sizes and types of pallets in one racking system. These panels are not a one sizes fits all option either. They can be specifically engineered to meet a specific weight capacity. The only way you can be sure that you are getting a quality decking panel is to only buy wire decking that is R-Mark certified to ensure that it meets RMI (Rack Manufacturers Institute) standards.
With all that being said, do you really need wire decking? The answer to that question is that it depends on your needs. Racking systems can be designed to hold pallets without any pallet supports besides the beams, typically this is only for pallet sizes that never change and that are relatively light weight. Wire decking is a great option for anyone who has multiple sizes or types of pallets in their operation. Or maybe you like to have the peace of mind that there is some extra support under your pallets.
Overall Wire decking just helps to make a pallet racking system safer. It acts a support for pallets that might not be sitting directly on the beams. It can also help to prevent fall through. As the storage industry has evolved, so has its equipment. Pallet racking almost always utilizes it now, whereas 20 to 30 years ago, it was not that common.
Regardless if you use wire decking or not, your racking system is only as safe as the owners and operators make it.
